First Lazy Days Skirt Gift

I made the great pink skirt for a birthday gift. Well, I took a couple more pictures of it with the custom tag that I also made.

I’m kicking myself that I didn’t take a better picture here. I don’t like that I didn’t lay the skirt out nicely here and you can see the back side. Oh well.
Here is a close up of the tag.

Finally the entire gift. I picked up a simple white top with flutter sleeves and capri length white tights with lace on the bottom to go with the skirt and the boys picked out the magnet set for her.

Baby Wash Cloths

I love babies and baby showers. They are just the most perfect reason to celebrate. I love being able to make nice things that the new mom will be able to use. I usually check the registry as well because I was so dissappointed at my own shower when I got almost nothing from my registry. I love that everyone wanted to get me something special but I had things on there that I NEEDED! Anyway, this mom-to-be had a TON of stuff that had been purchased from the registry so I didn’t feel bad at all by making her a gift instead!

I knew I wanted to make baby sized wash cloths. I already had about 3 yards of the micro terry cloth in my stash of fabrics. I also knew the mom-to-be really loves owls, so I hit up the fabric store and got a few fabrics to go with the owl theme and to line the back of the wash cloths.

There are tons of blogs and instruction sites out there giving ideas and measurements and I found this one pretty useful and close to the idea I had in my head. The big difference is that I cut and used the terry cloth from the bolt and didn’t buy cloths all done already.

Here are mine all done!

Oh, and the one on top (there are two for the shower but only one pictured) I got the idea for from here. I added a bit more stitching around the edges of the fabric strip to keep it flat. I also just surged around the edges on this one instead of doing a binding.

On the rest of them, I cut out 8″ x 8″ squares of both the micro terry cloth and the fabrics. I made sure to wash on hot and dry to pre-shrink everything. Then I just put them right side together and sewed around the edges, clipping the corners and trimming excess around the seams. I left a spot open to turn everything. I used a knitting needle to work the corners then I ironed it and did a top stitch around the edges.

I may be a bit biased because I made them, but I think they turned out great!

Then I hit up the local cloth diaper store which happens to be less than a mile from my house; and got a great baby body wash/shampoo and a small sample of my favorite diaper cream (good for everything cream)!

I really wish I had the time to make a basket to put everything in. I do have another friend that is pregnant….

More Lazy Days Skirts

I hit up a local quilting shop yesterday and got some fabric to make a few more Oliver + S Lazy Days skirts.

The yellow fabric is called Better Gnomes & Gardens by Heather DuPont. The red and yellow is a batik but I don’t have a name for it. The light blue fabric is called Cosmos by Dan Bennet and the dark blue one is called Color Me Retro by Jeni Baker.

I have a friend that has two little girls. They are the same ages as Hugh and Owen. We always send gifts back and forth for the kids’ birthdays and Christmas. These skirts will be part of their birthday gifts!

The pink skirt was a last minute add on. Hugh got his first invite to a girl’s birthday party this weekend so I let him pick out some more fabric to make her a skirt as well.

Even though I don’t like pink, I do think it came out pretty cute.

I made custom tags for each of the skirts. It has the first letter of the girl’s name on it. (Just a quick note here…I got a question about the selvedge edge showing on the skirts…I followed the pattern exactly as stated and the pattern said to leave it on. I do see how it may shrink differently in the wash though. I did cut it off and serge the edge on the pink skirt for a nicer finish)

I just can’t get over how easy these are to make! I may have to buy one of the oliver + s patterns now, if everything they have turns out this great!

Inspiration

I have been spending lots of time on pinterest and I came across a blog. I have fallen in love with everything that she sews. The clothing that she makes her daughter is to die for! Not only was her blog an inspiration for this one but an item that she sews her daughter all the time was my inspiration for this….

It is the oliver + s lazy days skirt. I can see why she makes this all the time! It only took me around a half an hour and I used up extra supplies just lying around my sewing area.

The skirt is made from one piece of fabric edge to edge with some elastic at the waist and a ribbon for trim at the bottom.

Miss Faye looks adorable in it! I can see myself making MANY different versions of this skirt!

As Miss Faye gets more mobile, the photos are getting harder to take though!

As a side note, you can see that Miss Faye’s crib is pink…I will get a post up soon showing that project!

Spring Bloomers

It has been quite a long time since I have sewn an article of clothing. I was sooo excited when I found out we were going to have a girl so I would have an excuse to sew more. Here is the first thing I have made for my little girl. I made a pair of spring bloomers for Miss Faye

I have no idea what lines the fabrics came from. I got them at the local Hobby Lobby. I usually hate to shop there for fabric since their selection is so poor but I happened to walk by and loved the print.

I just love the detail that the giant ric rack gives around the ankles.
 

And here is my little model. I need to make a cute top to go with these…the onsie just doesn’t do it justice. I love the elastic waist and that the bloomers are roomy enough to fit over her cloth diaper. So many things just don’t fit over the fluff.

I got the pattern from this book. It was pretty easy to follow the directions and I will definitely make her a couple more pairs. I can see them in a nice corduroy for fall or a fun applique on the bum!
