Halloween Costumes

I know, I know…this post is coming a bit late. I have been both busy and a slacker.

This year I mainly focused on Miss Faye’s costume. Owen decided to go as Superman…which Hugh had done a couple of years ago so we already had that one. Hugh decided to go as Wolverine, but not the cartoon Wolverine, the movie Wolverine. So, I hit the store and bought him a muscle shirt and the claws. Easy and done. For Miss Faye, I decided to make her a ghost. I kept seeing the tutu ghost costumes all over and I knew that would be easy and adorable so that is what I did.

The tutu skirt was easy. I just bought 2 yards of tulle and cut it into strips. I know you can buy it in the 6 inch roll but it cost more that way. The strips were just looped around a piece of ribbon. Easy and done.

If you look closely you can see sparkles. I did splurge on one roll of glitter white tulle. I only put a few pieces in the skirt as it was really stiff and scratchy.

For the top, I used a long sleeved white onsie that we already had in Faye’s drawers. I added eyes and a mouth out of black scraps from my stash.

I put a quick and easy running stitch around the edges in white to make it stand out.

Here I am with Miss Faye in her costume. I didn’t get very many pictures that day. I’m thinking I will dress her back up to get some better pictures. As you can see I made myself up with a sugar skull. If it had not been raining and gross I would have attempted fun clothes to finish the look.

….and here we all are, heading out to trick or treat in the rain. Don’t mind that Owen does not have red bottoms on. I had them but we could not find them anywhere.

ETA…I took some pictures of Faye in her costume. She moves around so much that these were the best I could get.

A Little Firecracker!

Now that the festivities from the 4th of July are over I have a few minutes to sit down, think, and get a post up! Miss Faye celebrated the 4th in style of course. I picked up this great red and white fabric back in May. I love it and I knew right away that I would use it for ‘something’ for the 4th of July. I also still have about a 1/4 yard left for the future! I do not know the specifics for it though. I picked it up from Jo Anne Fabrics.

Throw in some blue….just a tiny bit at the waist and a 2.5 inch hem with some white top stitching….

….and Miss Faye becomes my Little Firecracker!

Here is an action shot. We were waiting for it to get dark enough for fireworks.

All three kids!

A stress busting skirt!

I have been slack in the blog department. I have been keeping very busy though! I had a joint birthday party for the boys, I made a dress for Miss Faye, and we had an awesome camping trip. I will get posts up for all of those things soon!

For now, I made yet another Lazy Days Skirt for Miss Faye. The quick and easy aspect of the skirt makes me feel like I have accomplished something. Even if it only took me around 35 minutes to make. I have so many other projects that are huge time and energy eaters that ‘accomplishing’ something makes me feel like I’m out of the project rut.

Some of the projects that I’m working on…..

  • A set of cocktail sized napkins for a Montessori classroom (I’m actually almost finished with these).
  • A guest blog post for a good friend (not hard but I need the mental energy to rework a current post to make it ‘right’)
  • A 4th of July dress or outfit for Miss Faye
  • Planning and putting up a chicken wire fence to keep the bunnies out of my garden
  • Planning Miss Faye’s 1st birthday party
  • Making a party dress for Miss Faye
  • I got an awesome dresser that I garbage picked…I need to refinish/paint it
  • A full set of curtains for a friend’s bedroom

 Here is the skirt.

I used left over fabric from a birthday gift to Hugh’s Birthday Buddy. Shown in this post. I really liked it with the darker purple ribbon but I didn’t have enough so I made a quick trip to the store for this. I also added some top stitching around the waist and a matching purple tag. I also switched to using my surger.

I made this skirt a bit on the long side so that it will last longer for Miss Faye. Now, I need to come up with a top to match it…or at least sort of go with the skirt. Right now I have nothing.

First Lazy Days Skirt Gift

I made the great pink skirt for a birthday gift. Well, I took a couple more pictures of it with the custom tag that I also made.

I’m kicking myself that I didn’t take a better picture here. I don’t like that I didn’t lay the skirt out nicely here and you can see the back side. Oh well.
Here is a close up of the tag.

Finally the entire gift. I picked up a simple white top with flutter sleeves and capri length white tights with lace on the bottom to go with the skirt and the boys picked out the magnet set for her.

More Lazy Days Skirts

I hit up a local quilting shop yesterday and got some fabric to make a few more Oliver + S Lazy Days skirts.

The yellow fabric is called Better Gnomes & Gardens by Heather DuPont. The red and yellow is a batik but I don’t have a name for it. The light blue fabric is called Cosmos by Dan Bennet and the dark blue one is called Color Me Retro by Jeni Baker.

I have a friend that has two little girls. They are the same ages as Hugh and Owen. We always send gifts back and forth for the kids’ birthdays and Christmas. These skirts will be part of their birthday gifts!

The pink skirt was a last minute add on. Hugh got his first invite to a girl’s birthday party this weekend so I let him pick out some more fabric to make her a skirt as well.

Even though I don’t like pink, I do think it came out pretty cute.

I made custom tags for each of the skirts. It has the first letter of the girl’s name on it. (Just a quick note here…I got a question about the selvedge edge showing on the skirts…I followed the pattern exactly as stated and the pattern said to leave it on. I do see how it may shrink differently in the wash though. I did cut it off and serge the edge on the pink skirt for a nicer finish)

I just can’t get over how easy these are to make! I may have to buy one of the oliver + s patterns now, if everything they have turns out this great!
